Top scoring ace of the 356th Fighter Group, Donald J Strait, flying his P-51D Mustang Jersey Jerk, together with his wingman Clinton Burdick and pilots of the 356th FG, in action against Luftwaffe Fw190s while escorting B-17 bombers on the way home from a raid over Germany, during the late winter of 1944. Based at Martlesham Heath in Suffolk, the 356th FG was renowned for the quality of its leadership, earning a Distinguished Unit Citation in 1944, and destroying over 270 enemy aircraft on 400 missions in Europe.
